The 508B-2 by Newport is a Two-Wire Current Loop Indicator designed to accept various process signals and presenting the resulting process variable in either engineering or percentage units across a range of parameters, including level, temperature, flow, and pressure. The easily configurate push-on jumpers of the 508B-2 allows for customization of the input ranges, decimal point precision, and right-hand zero placement. For further precision adjustment, the instrument incorporates 25-turn potentiometers to fine-tune zero and span values. Users can even transition from positive slope response to negative slope response by altering two additional push-on jumpers, granting flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.
The 508B-2 derives its operating power directly from the current loop, with a minimal voltage drop of less than 2.5 V or 2.5 mW at 1 mA. This indicator boasts electrical isolation from its casing, rendering it impervious to most sources of electrical interference commonly encountered in process-controlled environments. It can endure input overrange currents of up to 250 mA in the forward direction and 1000 mA in reverse, guaranteeing robust performance in challenging conditions. The 508B-2 exhibits exceptional resilience to vibration and shock, thanks to its low mass design and multi-point circuit board support. Its rugged construction, featuring die-cast housing and a protective polyurethane paint finish, is complemented by a full fluorosilicone gasketing, ensuring a virtually waterproof enclosure.
The compact yet sturdy die-cast zinc-alloy case of the 508B-2 is designed for easy integration. It can be directly connected to a conduit using a "T" junction box. The case's dimensions make it suitable for fitting into 3" I.D. or larger housings that require minimal vertical clearance, less than 2". Conveniently, a 1/2" EMT conduit fitting is positioned on the side of the case beneath the display, equipped with two 0.3 millimeter long, #18 stranded insulated wires passing through a neoprene moisture plug for secure hookup to junction boxes using standard wire nuts. These wires consist of a white wire for the "-" signal input and a black wire for the "+" signal input. Additionally, male conduit fittings are securely housed within a rubber stopper.
