The 558B by Newport is a Two-Wire Current Loop Indicator designed to facilitate the monitoring and display of process variables, offering the flexibility of presenting data in either percentage or engineering units. This indicator stands out by its ability to operate without the need for a separate power supply or external power connections, as it efficiently draws its operational power directly from the current loop, boasting a minimal voltage drop of less than 2.5 volts. The 558B can withstand up to 200 milliamps in forward current and an impressive 1000 milliamps in reverse current. This indicator also features a compact and durable black polycarbonate case with a depth of under 110 millimeters, accompanied by a standard 1/8 DIN panel-mount bezel.

The 558B has a user-friendly interface, consisting of five high-quality liquid crystal 7-segment digits, each measuring 12.7 millimeters. These digits are capable of displaying a wide range of values, with an active count range spanning ±1999, along with the option to include one or two dummy right-hand zeros. The indicator can adjust zero elevation or suppression beyond the full scale. To fine-tune the readout for either engineering-unit or percentage display, users can take advantage of programmable jumpers. Additionally, both span and zero adjustments are easily achievable through multi-turn potentiometers, conveniently accessible through the display board. The 558B allows gas-tight jumpers for the inclusion of dummy right-hand zeros, offering four decimal-point locations, four coarse zero ranges, and three input ranges when removed from its protective casing. Notably, the indicator provides two extra jumpers that enable the reversal of the span slope, resulting in an inverted relationship between input and reading. This feature allows for the programming of a 4-20 mA input to produce readings ranging from 2000 to -18000 when one dummy right-hand zero is employed.
