The Newport 8800 is an advanced 8-Channel Photonics Test System designed to facilitate precise testing and qualification of fiberoptic components in various applications, such as research and development, quality assurance, quality control, and manufacturing environments. Featuring two plug-in bays, the 8800 accommodates a range of interchangeable plug-in modules, including optical switches, optical attenuators, optical power meters, and stabilized light sources. This modular instrumentation platform allows users to configure application-specific photonics test systems according to their needs. For higher channel density requirements, multiple systems can be interconnected.
For seamless control and operation, the 8800 comes with the Photonics Test Studio software package, compatible with Windows 98 or NT 4.0. This software provides a user-friendly Windows-style interface, simplifying system operation and allowing the integration of multiple instruments within a single application. By treating each module as a separate window or "ActiveX" control, users can interact with only the required modules, and module windows can be easily resized for optimal screen space utilization. The software of the 8800 also allows users to create custom workspaces, tailored to different test applications, which can be saved and recalled as needed for efficient workflow management.
The 8800's adaptability extends its utility to diverse fields, such as fiber optic sensor applications, medical, and biophotonics. The mainframe houses essential communication functions, a central processor, and a power supply, making it compatible with both benchtop and instrumentation rack configurations using fold-out legs and rack mount kits. An auto-detect mechanism in the system allows for easy recognition of inserted modules upon powerup, and the LCD display, with backlit capability, offers module-specific status information or test-specific data for user convenience. The front panel of the 8800 boasts a variety of functions, including an active module LED, a ready LED, a module select button, an active LED, a laser active button, a light source output connector, and a laser safety cover with chain.
The 8800’s module bays are designed to accommodate a wide range of modules, empowering users to create various test systems tailored to their specific requirements. Individual module access can be achieved through eight keys surrounding the display or shortcut keys provided on each module. To enhance the system's capabilities further, the 8800 is compatible with LabView software drivers. This feature enables users to establish specific test configurations by linking various modules to the system, and it also allows integration with external instruments for increased flexibility. Control of the system can be managed directly using the internal soft-key addressable menu structure or remotely through a PC via RS-232C or GPIB/IEEE-488.2 connections.
