The Newport 505AN is a Laser Diode Driver that is designed to provide exceptional stability and minimal noise for effectively driving a wide array of laser diode, photodiode, and LED configurations. Offering the flexibility to select the laser current range within a choice of output current ranges, this driver ensures optimal application resolution. The unit accommodates a monitor photodiode, allowing reverse or zero biasing of up to 5 volts, eliminating the need for external power sources. The output current of the 505AN gradually ramps up to the designated operating set-point following a brief delay, safeguarded by a current limit setting that prevents the output from surpassing the maximum operating current of the laser diode, irrespective of the operational mode.
The 505AN incorporates relay shorting circuits and redundant FET circuits that provide essential protection to the laser diode during the initial stages of a soft-start sequence. An external analog modulation input offers voltage-based control of the output, offering a cost-effective solution for remote monitoring and control of the laser diode through an Analog Interface Card. Designed for intuitive operation, the front panel of the 505AN is thoughtfully organized into seven distinct sections, complete with a control knob. Its functionalities encompass an AC power switch, mod input, range switch, mode switch, output ON switch with indicator, error indicator LED, and limiting indicator LED. On the rear panel, the driver is equipped with an analog interface, output connectors, remote/local switch, photodiode reverse voltage bias adjust screw, photodiode BNC input, bandwidth switch, and AC power inlet.
The outputs of the 505AN are meticulously isolated from earth (chassis) ground to prevent potential damage from static discharge, AC transients, and multiple ground loop potentials. To mitigate risks associated with ground loops, transients, and noise, it is recommended to establish a singular point ground scheme at either pin 3 of the DB-9 connector or the binding post on the rear panel of the device. Operating in two distinct modes – constant current and constant optical power – the 505AN grants the option to switch between modes when the output is turned off and the mode switch is deactivated. This versatility extends to the integration of a monitor photodiode, allowing operation in a constant optical power mode. The standard inclusion of reverse voltage biasing for the photodiode further enhances the frequency response and dynamic range of the laser diode.
