The 9091 by Newport is an Optical Fiber Positioner, designed to meet the demanding requirements of aligning single-mode optical fibers. With its submicron resolution and exceptional stability, this positioner is engineered to deliver precise fiber alignment outcomes. The positioner features a comprehensive range of movement capabilities, including three axes of translation and two axes of rotation. Noteworthy design elements, such as sapphire seats, finely tuned 80-pitch adjustment screws, and a meticulously crafted kinematic arrangement, contribute to the stage's remarkable performance. These features culminate in a lifelong X and Y resolution of 0.01 µm, accompanied by minimal hysteresis. A distinct advantage of the 9091 lies in its integrated construction, where all motion components are rigidly attached to a single base. This configuration yields an extraordinary 0.02 μm resolution, elevating stability to unprecedented levels.
The 9091 is equipped with convenient mounting holes that allow seamless integration of compatible accessories. An 8-32 threaded mounting hole facilitates placement on a pedestal or post. Constructed as a single stage and operated by five precision actuators within a robust framework, the 9091 provides a distinctive combination of five degrees of freedom and one constraint. This arrangement inherently enhances stability compared to conventional fiber aligners composed of stacked single-axis stages. The aligner's stage plate accommodates the optical fiber, and its support is orchestrated in the X-Y plane through two perpendicular 80-pitch screws intersecting radially at the fiber end. Efficient fiber translation can be achieved by manipulating the X or Y screws. For pure rotational movement around the fiber end, one of the Z-screws can be held steady with an Allen wrench while adjusting the Z-knob. To minimize unintended translation during rotation, precise alignment of the fiber-end face within the defined fiber tip plane established by the Z-axis screws is crucial. Balanced adjustment of the two Z-screws via the Z-knobs results in pure Z-axis translation.
