The FSM-300-NM by Newport is an advanced Fast Steering System designed for precise two-axis rotation without the need for mirrors. This high-performance system offers a remarkable combination of high bandwidth and sub-microradian resolution, making it particularly suitable for various commercial applications, including image stabilization, tracking, laser pointing, and laser beam stabilization. A distinctive feature of the FSM-300-NM is its unique flexure design, which eliminates the need for bearing surfaces commonly found in galvanometer scanners. This design ensures confined motion of the mirror, resulting in extended system lifetime, exceptional accuracy, and ultra-smooth motion.
The FSM-300-NM can be utilized in active beam stabilization system applications, where it effectively compensates for laser beam drift or stabilizes a beam passing between optical tables. The system includes a controller/driver that facilitates a feedback interface between the drivers and angle sensors. This system allows precise current supply to the voice coils, enabling controlled tilting and tipping of the mirror assembly. This system also provides an intuitive interface for users to monitor the mirror's position and apply control voltages. For enhanced performance in Laser Pointing applications, the FSM-300-NM is fully compatible with the FSM-CD300 series controller. Independent gain and DC offset adjustments for both the X and Y axes enable highly accurate point-to-point movements.
Compared to galvo scanners, the FSM-300-NM offers several advantages, including a broader selection of mirror substrates and coatings, lower wavefront distortion, and larger apertures. Additionally, the system's rotational axis intersects at a single pivot point, eliminating Pincushion Distortion and displacement jitters that may occur with dual XY galvos. The FSM-300-NM utilizes four voice coil actuators, which contribute to fast and high-bandwidth rotation. These actuators work in push-pull pairs to provide smooth and even torque distribution to the mirror. To ensure precise and stable tracking and pointing, this system incorporates an internal optical-based feedback loop within its head. This feedback loop references the position to the support frame, further enhancing accuracy during operation.
