The SG-30X48-2 by Newport is a Honeycomb Core Optical Breadboard, designed to provide exceptional stability and rigidity for demanding research applications. Featuring a 1/4-20 hole pattern on a 1 inch grid, this breadboard offers a flatness of <±0.004 inches over 2 square feet. The breadboard's 3/16 inch ferromagnetic steel surface is complemented by sealed holes and enhanced dampening. The side panels of the SG-30X48-2 are constructed from highly damped, epoxy sealed wood composite, providing superior damping performance and eliminating resonance compared to metal slide designs. This damping performance is represented and evaluated with a compliance curve.

At its core, the SG-30X48-2 incorporates a 4.8 mm thick working surface, expertly bonded to a polymeric material that both dampens the surface and seals the honeycomb core. The vertically bonded honeycomb core design enables a rigid triple core interface, where the adhesive used exhibits a broadband damping factor higher than that of steel, effectively introducing substantial damping into the core. Moreover, a trussed honeycomb core design of the SG-30X48-2 optimizes the rigidity-to-weight ratio by utilizing an additional steel member to bridge across the cell's centers, resulting in a 0.03 inch thick triple core interface and a 50% increase in local rigidity.

The hexagonal shape of the SG-30X48-2's honeycomb core allows for a larger bonding area compared to traditional designs with corrugated wavy steel sheets, enhancing the strength of the truss design that bisects each hexagonal core. This unique construction provides superior mechanical stability. The mounting holes of the SG-30X48-2 have a 19 mm screw depth and are individually sealed, ensuring reliability and ease of cleaning. This prevents dust and liquids from entering the table, preserving its long-term damping performance and preventing degradation over time. With proper handling and care, this breadboard is expected to last for a period of ten years or more.
