Newport 502A-J

The 502A-J by Newport is a 4-20 mA Two-Wire Thermocouple Transmitter designed to process millivolt signals originating from a type J thermocouple. This transmitter offers cold junction compensation, common mode isolation, and signal amplification. The transmitter efficiently regulates the current draw from a power source ranging from 9 V dc to 50 V dc, producing a precisely scaled output signal within the 4 milliamp to 20 milliamp range. One of the standout features of the 502A-J is its robust common-mode voltage testing capability, which can withstand voltages of up to 1500 V rms between the input thermocouple and the output current circuit. To facilitate precise temperature measurement, this transmitter is equipped with tailored resistance values that ensure accurate curvi-linear cold-junction compensation.

The 502A-J offers a span that spans from 100°C to 800°C. This selection is achieved by positioning one of four jumpers, with additional fine-tuning accessible through a multiturn, top-accessible potentiometer. Furthermore, sixteen Zero steps enable precise placement of the 4.00 mA output temperature, ranging from -50°C to 700°C, with an additional multi-turn potentiometer for fine-tuning, again conveniently accessible from the top. Installation and wiring is achieveable with the 502A-J's input and output barrier strips, which can accommodate wires of up to two millimeters in diameter. These barrier strips are ingeniously mechanically isolated from each other, effectively preventing any undesired contact between input and output wiring during the device's installation.

The 502A-J boasts lightweight circuit boards meticulously arranged within a rigid box structure. These circuit boards are epoxied and soldered to the case top while environmental protection is further enhanced by double-coating the circuit-board box with RTV silicone. The 502A-J is engineered to withstand mechanical shocks, capable of enduring a 6-foot drop onto a hard surface when housed within a rugged, die-cast case. The case itself is crafted from Zamac, coated with a resilient polyurethane finish, and meticulously gasketed with fluorosilicone, providing an added layer of protection. The fluorosilicone plugs serve to safeguard the tip-access Span and Zero potential meter, while the option of an opaque top cover shields the barrier strips from uneven cooling or heating when exposed to varying environmental conditions. This transmitter can be configured with a bulkhead adapter, allowing for snap mounting into a relay track or wall installation.
